A Day in the Life of
a Heretik Engineer

Claire Williams | September 11, 2018

Every day, Heretik software engineers are busy at work creating the most efficient and flexible system for contract data analysis and review. Our team is always looking to make improvements for the needs of Heretik users. This takes dedication and consistency. Despite what you may have heard, a software engineer doesn’t just mean chugging through lines of code in a darkened room. In this article, Heretik software engineer Sam Miles let us tag along for what a typical day for him looks like.

8:45am: Sometimes I get to the office early. A couple of us like to play Mario Cart on the Nintendo Switch we have for the team. What better way to kick off the day than with a win?

9:00am: My day has officially started. The first thing I do is make some coffee. Can’t start the day without caffeine.

9:15am: Engineering Standup – Every day, the engineering team meets to chat about what we worked on the previous day, what we’re doing that day, and if we need any help from the group.

9:30am: Heads down – Day-to-day, I primarily work on building out the Heretik Viewer. I could be working on adding new features, or fixing a bug that pops up. If I run into major problems, David Barnes, Chief Architect, sits right behind me so I’ll wheel over to discuss problems and bounce ideas off one another. Collaboration is key.

11:30am: Lunch – At least once a month, we have a “Lunch and Learn,” where someone in the office has volunteered to give a presentation to the team, and Heretik orders lunch. This is not only relevant and interesting, but that person also gets to pick their favorite place to order from.

12:30pm: More heads down time. During this time, we will be working on our own projects, but we still keep one another in the loop and help when necessary.

5:15pm: Wrap up for the day and get organized for tomorrow. Maybe catch another game of Mario Cart on the way out!

The engineers constantly strive to improve user experience, and to continue to push the ways that data technology can be understood. It’s a lot of experimentation and exploration in order to further develop different avenues Heretik users can take to be successful.

“I like working at Heretik because we all value great ideas. It is very refreshing to work in a place where everyone is focused on building the best product possible without the distractions of bureaucracy or ego getting in the way.”

Heretik is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to join our team! If you are passionate about collaborating with a team that is transforming the way that enterprises interact with data – you’ll love it here.
